We are having a great time finishing up our Bread Study! This week is all about how and when we eat bread. We've also been mixing in some activities that go with the Winter holidays. We have practiced positional words using a gingerbread house and gingerbread men. We're making story predictions as we read about Mrs. Wishy Washy's Christmas, when her farm animals get in her house bath tub! Tomorrow will be lots of fun, because my son, Connor, is coming to school to show the kids how he makes pizza at the restaurant where he works!
Yesterday we graphed when we eat bread. This graph had a more difficult direction to follow this time. Students wrote B if they eat bread usually for breakfast, L if they eat bread usually for lunch, D if they eat it usually for dinner, M if they eat it for many meals, and N if they never eat bread. This had 2 purposes. We practiced following directions that have multiple unfamiliar steps. It is also good practice for beginning to use invented spelling when we write. At this stage, kids may write just one letter that they hear at the beginning of the word, to represent the whole word. Kids that are already writing strings of letters to represent words, may soon begin doing more of this. As they become familiar with the sounds of letters, we can be encouraging more and more early invented spelling!
Tomorrow will be the last day before our long Winter Break! We will not be in session for 2 weeks. I'll look forward to seeing you all again on January 6. Wishing you all a restful break with time together with your families!
